What is the most watched television event in history?

Posted by admin on July 13th, 2010 and filed under television | 8 Comments »

I’m not talking about television shows like the final episode of MASH, but events like Live Aid. We also forget about things like the moon landing. Which of all these major televised events was the most watched in history?

Princess Diana’s funeral was a big contender.

Wiki says:

There are no exact figures available for global television events.
However, a report by IPG media agency Initiative Worldwide stated that the 2006 FIFA World Cup was the most-watched sporting event of that year with an average 1.2 billion viewers per match [31].

Such statistics have, however, proved controversial, failing to stand up to scrutiny [32], and audience figures cited in billions are practically unverifiable.

It is popularly believed that the British TV show Top Gear is one of the most watched shows around the world. It is broadcast in 117 countries and is purportedly watched by up to one billion people.[33]

The funeral of Princess Diana was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people.[34]

The 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony from the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China was watched by an estimated four billion viewers worldwide.

How and how often does television influence you?

Posted by admin on July 10th, 2010 and filed under television | 1 Comment »

I’m not looking for generalizations or studies about the influence of television or movies. I want to know, specifically how has it affected your behavior in general, or in any given situation. Any characters that you try to emulate? Any mood that a show puts you in that you can stay in for days?

Those shows are entertaining, but as soon as I turn off the TV, then they are all forgotten until the next episode. I think commercials have more of an effect on me. I’m always looking to improve my life, and those commercials feed into that! Tight abs, nicer hair, better pictures, etc. Some of them are so ridiculous that they really stick in my mind too, like the gum one where the dad asks the babysitter if he can pay her in gum, as if it were the greatest thing in the world. Lol! "No one ever pays me in gum," the man at the end glumly says!

I guess if a movie or show were really scary, I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep for days. I have to leave the light on because you never know what awful thing could happen if I turn off the lights.

How can I tell how big of a television I should buy?

Posted by admin on July 7th, 2010 and filed under television | 5 Comments »

I am looking at purchasing either a new LCD or plasma television. I would like to know the pros and cons of both and how to determine the approximate size of TV given the size room that I am planning on putting the television in.

I recommend this …
Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color
Please try this link…..

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN52A650-52-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B001413DF8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1239277834&sr=1-4&tag=aor-sale-20

I researched this TV by reading reports from a major consumer magazine and the reviews in Amazon. I also looked at the TVs from Samsung in the local stores. But locally this model was very hard to find. I did find next model down in 52 inch and comparables in the smaller sizes.
Several reviews said the picture was "stunning" or "spectacular". Well we have owned this TV for 3 weeks now and the picture is truly stunning. As I read in one review, it is like you are on the set watching the characters and action.
Even our standard DVDs look much better than with our old LCD TV.
Pros:
Excellent picture from Sattelite, Standard DVD and Over-the-air sources.
Simple setup and adjustments. There were minimal tweaks to set things up.
(but then I only have it hooked up to my home theatre receiver and OTA cable).

Cons:
- slow to power on to picture, delays in picture appearing when changing channels or sources. (but not a major issue.
- Screen is more reflective than most LCDSs I have seen but not as much as Plasma or CRT Tvs. The brightness of the picture does overcome this in my situation but I would check it out if you are using it in a very bright room.

If I had to do it all over again I would definitely buy this TV.
I bought it from Amazon and the price was much less than what I could find locally. The delivery went smoothly.
Hope you like it.

How much should it cost to fix my television?

Posted by admin on July 4th, 2010 and filed under television | 1 Comment »

I have a 37 inch Polaroid television the sound started screeching, then the picture started having lines on the screen and now it will not even turn on. Should I have it check out? How much would I expect to pay? Am I better off just buying a new one? I have owned this television for 2 years and it is on a lot.

do not pay more than half of the price you paid for it.

sadly i believe it will be either too costly or impossible to repair your tv. i am a tv repair man and parts for Polaroid are hard to find.

What is the purpose of television going digital in February?

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2010 and filed under television | 10 Comments »

I hear people say that it’s to "free up that particular frequency for other uses". I don’t see this working because the signal may be digital when it hits your television, but the signal still has to be sent through the air in analogue. Is that the real purpose of the switch or is it something else. Supposedly the quality goes up when digital is used, but other than that I can’t see any real benefit.

What is this switch to digital really trying to accomplish?

Television signals are not on a single frequency. They are Frequency modulated signals. Like FM radio. When you tune into an FM station you are tuning to the center frequency. The actual signal is a bandwidth of frequencies above and below that center freq. So with digital you can narrow that bandwidth to carry the same amount of information. Digital will not free up a particular freq. but reduce the bandwidth needed. This allows for the frequencies associated with a certain channel to be used.

What is the name of the childrens handheld television where you upload shows onto?

Posted by admin on June 27th, 2010 and filed under television | 2 Comments »

I saw a television ad where there was a handheld children’s TV (I think they came in pink and blue) where they held up to 2 1/2 hours of televisions shows, which you had to plug the unit into the computer and download the episodes off of their company website. I believe Max and Ruby was featured. Thanks for your help!
